Alonso’s Real Madrid outclass Barcelona as Vinicius fury steals the spotlight

Real Madrid delivered a powerful performance at the Bernabéu. Xabi Alonso’s team defeated Barcelona 2-1 to extend their lead at the top of La Liga to five points. Jude Bellingham returned to form with his first league goal and assist of the season after recovering from shoulder surgery. Kylian Mbappé stayed lethal in front of goal and led the attack with confidence. Alonso’s tactical debut in El Clasico was nearly perfect. Yet, the night ended with tension as Vinicius Jr reacted angrily to his substitution.

The Brazilian winger was visibly frustrated when taken off in the 72nd minute. He ignored Alonso, walked straight down the tunnel, and returned minutes later still upset. Spanish football expert Guillem Balague analysed the intensity of the match and the growing rift between Vinicius and Real Madrid.

    Alonso’s blueprint transforms Real Madrid

Alonso’s first Clasico as a manager couldn’t have gone much better. Seven of Madrid’s last eight coaches had lost their first league encounter with Barcelona. After Carlo Ancelotti’s free-flowing approach faltered last season, Alonso’s disciplined structure paid off immediately.

“He got every detail right. Real Madrid were excellent, and Barcelona struggled because of how organised Madrid were,” Balague said. “They pressed high for as long as possible and recovered shape quickly when beaten. Even Vinicius tracked back. Their lines were tight, only five to ten metres apart, and Barcelona had no answers.”

The system also revitalised Jude Bellingham. Last season, he carried too much of the workload. This time, his position offered both discipline and freedom. He started on the right but often moved inside to link with Mbappé or attack the box.

“With Eduardo Camavinga in the centre, Madrid gained control and dynamism,” Balague explained. “That shifted Bellingham wider, but he still had space to create. He followed Mbappé’s movements, played incisive passes, and attacked the penalty area. His positioning made Barcelona’s midfield uncomfortable all evening.”

    Vinicius meltdown exposes fragile relationship

Vinicius remains adored by Madrid fans, his name echoing throughout the Bernabéu. But behind the cheers, his relationship with the club appears strained. Reports suggest Real Madrid would consider selling him if a massive offer arrived. Contract talks have also stalled, leaving one year on his deal after this season.

His furious reaction to being substituted showed the tension clearly. After full-time, he even tried to confront Lamine Yamal but was stopped by teammates. “He’ll face criticism, and rightly so, because he showed disrespect to Rodrygo, who replaced him,” Balague said. “But Vinicius has always felt like the world is against him. That feeling drives him, but it also isolates him. He sees himself near the top, yet the club’s focus has shifted toward Mbappé.”

Balague believes Vinicius feels unprotected by the club. “There are reports, perhaps leaked or not denied by Madrid, saying they’d accept €250 million for him. He senses that lack of trust. When Alonso took him off—fairly, since he stopped defending—he thought, ‘why always me?’ Right now, rebuilding trust between him and the club looks difficult.”

    Barcelona’s structure crumbles under pressure

Barcelona’s display reflected their troubled start to the season. After winning all four Clasicos last year, this version looked uncertain and slow. Injuries to Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, and Dani Olmo have disrupted Hansi Flick’s system and intensity.

“The team lacks sharpness without the ball,” Balague said. “They press less, react slower, and look easier to attack. On Mbappé’s goal, Alejandro Balde played him onside, and the midfield didn’t close down. It’s a sign of how fragile they’ve become.”

Lamine Yamal, so dangerous against Madrid last year, couldn’t make an impact. “He doesn’t seem fully fit, maybe struggling with groin pain,” Balague said. “The Barcelona that caught Mbappé offside eight times last season is gone. They miss Raphinha’s aggression and energy on both ends.”

Marcus Rashford, on loan from Manchester United, also found himself isolated. “He tried to create from the left but faced multiple defenders and lost possession often,” Balague noted. “His assist came from one of the few moments when Barcelona pressed high. They don’t do that enough anymore, and that’s why their entire system collapses.”
