An electric streetcar derailed in Lisbon on Wednesday, killing at least 15 and injuring 18 others. Portuguese television showed the yellow-and-white tram lying on its side on the narrow road it usually travels. The vehicle runs up and down a steep city hill and often carries more than 40 passengers.
President Extends Condolences
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed sympathy to all victims and families affected by the disaster. Emergency teams quickly rushed to the scene, with several dozen workers assisting the injured and securing the area. The tram’s roof and sides appeared heavily crumpled after the violent crash.
Cause of Tragedy Still Unknown
Local media reported that the accident happened around 6 pm, during the busy evening commute. Authorities have not yet identified what caused the derailment. Residents rely heavily on the Glória funicular, which has long served as one of Lisbon’s most familiar and practical forms of transport.
