Drone Activity Forces Airport Closures
Operations at Munich Airport are returning step by step after two separate shutdowns caused by drones flying near the runways. The first interruption came late Thursday evening when air traffic controllers ordered a halt to flights following confirmed sightings. Less than a day later, similar reports forced another suspension on Friday night, bringing travel to a standstill and diverting numerous planes to airports in neighboring cities such as Stuttgart and Vienna.
Thousands Left Waiting Overnight
The repeated closures stranded thousands of passengers, with more than 6,500 affected during the second shutdown alone. Those stuck at the airport were offered camp beds, snacks, and water as they waited for updates. While flights slowly began departing again on Saturday morning, airlines cautioned that delays and cancellations would continue as they worked to clear the backlog. Travelers were advised to check with carriers before leaving for the airport.
Political Pressure to Bolster Defenses
Authorities have yet to identify who was behind the drone activity, and details about the devices involved remain unknown. The incidents have reignited debate about airspace security in Germany, highlighting concerns over how exposed major transport hubs are to such intrusions. In response, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt promised swift action to strengthen counter-drone powers, including the possibility of giving security forces greater authority to neutralize aerial threats.
