Arrest and Police Activity
Prince Andrew was arrested on Thursday over alleged misconduct in public office linked to his previous role as the United Kingdom’s trade envoy. Police conducted searches at his properties in Berkshire and Norfolk. A statement confirmed a man in his sixties remained in custody while investigations continue. Andrew, who turned 66 on the day of his arrest, has been living at Sandringham in Norfolk since leaving his Windsor residence.
Authorities stressed the importance of preserving the integrity of the inquiry and promised updates as the case develops. Unmarked police vehicles were seen outside his Norfolk home early Thursday morning.
Links to Controversial Figures and Deals
Recent reports indicate Andrew may have shared potentially sensitive documents with the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein during his tenure as trade envoy. Emails obtained by the Financial Times suggest he was involved in discussions over an $8 billion oil-for-cash swap, communicating with Epstein and a banker while Epstein was under house arrest for a 2008 sex offense.
Royal commentator Craig Prescott of Royal Holloway, University of London described the situation as one of the most dramatic falls from grace in modern royal history. Policing expert Danny Shaw noted that suspects are usually held for 12 to 24 hours before being charged or released, with a maximum detention period of 96 hours possible under judicial approval. Andrew is expected to remain in a standard custody cell pending his interview, without special privileges.
Royal Response and Past Controversies
Thames Valley Police had earlier confirmed it was assessing allegations of misconduct against Andrew. This prompted King Charles III to express concern publicly and assure that Buckingham Palace would support the investigation.
In October, Charles removed Andrew’s remaining royal titles and required him to vacate Royal Lodge, following years of controversy over his connection to Epstein. Andrew stepped back from royal duties in 2019 after a widely criticized BBC interview regarding the friendship.
He has not been charged in relation to Epstein and denies any wrongdoing. In 2022, Andrew reached a settlement with Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of sexual abuse when she was 17. While he did not admit liability, he acknowledged her suffering as a trafficking victim. Giuffre died by suicide in April at age 41, and her posthumous memoir, Nobody’s Girl, was released in October.
