Expansion Across Multiple States
OpenAI, in collaboration with Oracle and SoftBank, has revealed plans to build five new data centers in the United States as part of the ongoing Stargate initiative. The new locations include Shackelford County, Texas; Doña Ana County, New Mexico; Milam County, Texas; Lordstown, Ohio; and an additional site in the Midwest yet to be announced. With these developments, the program’s projected computing capacity will reach nearly 7 gigawatts, contributing to a long-term plan aimed at up to $500 billion in AI infrastructure investment.
Partners Share Responsibilities
The companies outlined their respective roles in the expansion. Oracle will oversee three of the new facilities, while SoftBank will participate in developing the other two. This phase brings total Stargate commitments close to $400 billion. Company officials emphasized that the partnership is critical to supporting future AI systems, combining Oracle’s expertise in data-center operations with SoftBank’s global network capabilities and OpenAI’s AI development needs.
Job Creation and Infrastructure Impact
The consortium projects that the new sites will generate tens of thousands of jobs, ranging from temporary construction positions to permanent operational roles. Local authorities are reviewing zoning approvals, incentives, and utility infrastructure plans connected to the projects. Analysts note that facilities of this size will put significant demands on electricity and water supplies, particularly in Texas and New Mexico. Despite these challenges, proponents argue that Stargate will enhance U.S. competitiveness in AI while bringing substantial economic benefits to the communities hosting the centers.
