Deadly Blast in Southern Moscow
Russian authorities have launched an investigation into a deadly explosion that struck southern Moscow on Monday morning, killing Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, a senior figure in the Russian Armed Forces. Investigators said Sarvarov, who headed the Operational Training Directorate of the General Staff, died from injuries sustained when a car exploded in a parking lot near a residential building. Russian media reported that the blast occurred shortly after the general arrived at the site, triggering an immediate emergency response.
Criminal Case Opened, Motive Unclear
Russia’s Investigative Committee confirmed that it has opened a criminal case into Sarvarov’s death and is working to determine who was behind the attack. Officials said they have not yet established a motive, but the investigation is actively examining multiple scenarios. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage, questioning witnesses and eyewitnesses, and conducting forensic and explosives examinations as part of the inquiry.
Investigators Cite Possible Ukrainian Role
Russian investigators have identified Ukraine as a potential suspect in the killing. “Investigators are pursuing numerous lines of enquiry regarding the murder. One of these is that the crime was orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services,” Investigative Committee spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko said. She added, “The investigation will appoint the necessary examinations, including forensic and explosives. Witnesses and eyewitnesses are being interrogated, and surveillance cameras are being examined.” Ukrainian officials have not commented on the allegations.
Part of a Broader Pattern Since 2022
The killing marks the latest in a series of high-profile attacks in Moscow since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. In December 2024, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov was killed by a remotely detonated scooter, while Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik died in April after a car bomb explosion. Ukraine has not officially claimed responsibility for either incident, and Russian authorities continue to investigate whether the attacks are connected.
